CHUP YING TONG BY-LAWS
Thomas
M. C. Chang sent a copy of the new translation of the Chup Ying Tong (CYT)
by-laws. This by-laws was originally written in Chinese back in 1873. The
translation goal was to translate as literally as they knew, avoiding
paraphrasing, explanatory comment or re-writing for the sake of smooth reading
or contemporary language. The founders’ philosophy of life, principles of
behavior towards associates, neighbors and community, their firm commitment for
harmony and peace making are revealed. CYT was founded by 36 friends. It is not
a clan or village society like Oo Syak.
Thomas
M.C. Chang is the treasurer of CYT. He is retired, a professor-emeritus, UH at
Manoa. In January 2000 his article titled Pidgin English formed great divide,
appeared in the Honolulu Advertiser Hawaii Ways, Hawaii Days. Thomas Chang
is a member of Oo Syak.
Members
interested in seeing the translation can contact Ed Chang, Maile Chang, or Wah
Chock Chang. We thank Thomas Chang for sharing this important document with the
members of Oo Syak Gee Lu.
