THREE SCHOLARSHIPS TO BE

AWARDED IN 2000

By the time you receive this newsletter hopefully there still is time left to submit an application for the Oo Syak Gee Lu Society Scholarships. Please pass on copies to Oo Syak Gee Lu Society members who are or will be full time students this fall. Scholarship applications will be accepted up until 8:00 p.m. on June 17, 2000.

Again, in it’s second year, our society will award three scholarships (first $1,000, second $750, and third $500). If you are not yet a member, you can still apply for membership before the June 17, 2000 scholarship application deadline. To apply for Oo Syak Gee Lu Society membership, please call Ed Chang at 623-5910 (H) or 543-4227 (W). Email address is echang@hei.com.

Three new, independent judges will select the winners who will be announced and introduced at our August 12, 2000 Annual Banquet.

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS

Our new members are Cathy C. Chang and Christina Chang Tagami. They are mother and daughter. Cathy is the wife of Donald Yau Tim Chang. Welcome Cathy and Christina to the Oo Syak Gee Lu Society.

OO SYAK TEE SHIRTS AND BANNERS

Oo Syak tee shirt design is just about completed. We are planning to have our society tee shirts available for the October Double Ten Parade. Those who want a free tee shirt will have to be in the parade. Tee shirts to be passed out at the parade starting point. The tee shirts will be gray with red lettering, on the back: Oo Syak Gee Lu Society in Chinese characters and English and with logo; on the front: Oo Syak Gee Lu Society in small Chinese characters next to logo.

We are seeking a source for our banners. We plan on procuring a parade banner made of “parachute-type” material and a banquet banner made of traditional silk material. If anyone knows where we can have the banners made, please call Edith Won (373-2658) or Donna Chang (537-4015).

NOMINATIONS FOR MODEL CHINESE MOTHER AND FATHER 2000

Our society did submit nominations for these awards. We feel they are both excellent candidates (Mother and Father). According to the United Chinese Society officials, this year was a very good year for receiving nominations. Apparently there were many excellent nominations submitted. Sorry, but we won’t reveal our nominations unless they win an award.

OO SYAK GEE LU SOCIETY MEMBERSHIP CERTIFICATE

If you misplaced your membership certificate or never received one, and you want one, please call Ed Chang at 543-4227. He will make you one and mail it to you.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

The Board of Directors reminds you that the quarterly meetings are open to the membership. These meetings are held on the third Sunday of January, April, July and October.

After the meetings, a generous lunch is served at no charge. Call Maile Chang, 1st VP, at 946-6781 to let her know you are attending so we can arrange for enough tables at Yong Sing Restaurant.
