ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP AND

ELECTION MEETING

 

Members are all invited to the annual membership and election meeting:

 

Date:          Sunday, November 28, 1999

 

Time: 11:00 a.m. meeting

          12 noon lunch

 

Place: Yong Sing Restaurant,

          1055 Alakea Street

 

Parking: Alii Place Bldg. At corner of         Alakea and Hotel Streets

 

Cost: FREE to members

 

Come and meet your fellow members of the Oo Syak Gee Lu Society. Elect the Officers and Directors for the Year 2000. Ask about the place where your descendants came from, and of course, have a delicious lunch at Yong Sing Restaurant.

 

Three door prizes will be given. They include 1 roast duck, and 2 each 2 lb. roast pork, char siu mix.

 

Please call Maile Chang (946-6781) or Donna Chang (537-4015) or Ed Chang (623-5910) to save your place or places at the gathering. Call before November 22, 1999.

 

Of course, if you make reservations, and find out later that you cannot attend, please let us know so we can adjust the number of tables required.

ABOUT THE OFFICER NOMINEES

 

Alvin Chang has served as a Director for several years. His father (Naiman), mother (Gertrude), and brother (Lawrence) preceded him as President of the Society. Alvin would like to serve the membership as they did for many years.

 

Maile Chang has served as 1st VP and 2nd VP. She has been the hard working annual banquet chairperson for many years. She is active in the Sam Heong Temple Society and the Chang Wing Yong Tong Society.

 

Edith Won has served as an officer or director and is a member of the Public Relations, Welfare and Membership Committee. She has brought entertainer Frank DeLima to our annual banquets for our members’ entertainment.

 

Daryl Hu has been treasurer for the past four years. Being a CPA he provides the much needed professional skills of accounting and financial advice.

 

Donna Chang has been English Secretary for the past four years. A school teacher and President of the Kong Chow Benevolent Association, she provides accurate minutes of meeting and leadership.

 

Wah Chock Chang has been active in the Society for many, many years. He is well know to other Chinese societies and knows the history of Oo Syak Gee Lu.

1999 ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS

 

The Society’s first annual scholarship awards were presented at the August 14 Annual Banquet.

 

First place was awarded to Julie Ann Wai Lan Chang. Julie is attending Creighton University School  of Medicine. Her parents are Hing D. S. Chang, Jr. and Lorene M. A. Chang.

 

Second place went to Kevin Koon Chung Chang. Kevin is attending Cornell University. His parents are Kenneth K. C. Chang and Donna B. K. N. Chang.

 

Third place went to Ahnya Lai Wan Heao’onohilani Chang. Ahnya is attending Carnegie Mellon University. Her parents are Anthony K. U. Chang and Lisa M. K. Chang.

 

All applicants are outstanding students. This made it very difficult for the three independent judges.

 

This is an annual scholarship program. All Oo Syak Gee Lu Society members who are or will be full time 4-year or 2-year higher education program students are encouraged to apply.

 

 

FINANCIAL STATUS OF THE SOCIETY

 

You are encouraged to attend the annual membership/election meeting on November 28, 1999 to hear more about the financial condition of the Society.

 

The Society has a real estate holding, investments in Hawaiian Tax Free, Hawaiian Electric Industries, GTE Corp, and Walt Disney, just to name a few.

 

The six-unit apartment building is located off of Kapiolani Blvd. near the intersection of Date, Kamoku, and Kapiolani.

 

 

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REQUESTED

 

Donations for the Taiwan Earthquake Relief can be made to the United Chinese Society (UCS). The UCS is a tax exempt corporation under IRS Code 501 (c) (3), such that all donations made payable to the society are tax-exempt for charitable deductions as allowed by law.

 

Make your individual donation by check, payable to the United Chinese Society with memo for Taiwan Earthquake Relief, and mail or deliver your contribution to 42 N. King Street, Honolulu, HI 96817.

 

The UCS will consolidate all donations and forward them to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission in Taiwan for proper distribution.

 

Our Society will make a donation.

 

 

3RD WORLDWIDE ZHONGSHAN ASSOCIATION CONVENTION

 

The Chung Shan Association of Hawaii requests assistance financially to host this convention in September 2000. This convention is scheduled for September 22, 23, and 24, 2000. It is anticipated that about 1500 convention attendees from around the world will attend. These are people with similar backgrounds as you and I.

 

As you may know, Oo Syak Village is part of the Chung Shan, Kwangtung, China community.

 

Our society will give a donation and possibly provide other assistance before and during the convention.

 

 

HAWAII CHINESE MUSEUM

 

Did you know that there is a Chinese Museum in Hawaii? The purpose of this museum is to honor, preserve, and perpetuate the legacies of  Hawaii’s Chinese, and to provide a history book about the Chinese in Hawaii.

 

The museum address is 3381 Kamaaina Place, Honolulu, Hawaii 96817.

 

The museum is requesting documents, photographs, and written history for exhibit to honor and give recognition to all Chinese Societies and Organizations that were part of Honolulu Chinatown 100 years ago. Oo Syak Gee Lu Society was founded in 1897.

The museum President/Historian is James G. Y. Ho (531-7887).

 

 

PUBLIC RELATIONS, WELFARE & MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE

 

The committee has several projects to work on. They include:

 

Designing and procuring an Oo Syak Gee Lu Society tee shirt and banner.

 

Developing additional programs to encourage participation in the Society.

 

So far the possible tee shirt design includes a white tee shirt with red lettering, wording on the back with Oo Syak Gee Lu Society in English. Design suggestions from the membership will be appreciated. The tee shirt and banner will be displayed in parades and at future Oo Syak Gee Lu Society events. The tee shirts will be issued at no charge to members participating in the parades and events.

 

Programs in the thought process include Society picnic, and Christmas party. Suggestions from the membership again will be appreciated.

 

FRANK DELIMA CDs and CASSETTES

 

Some of you were fortunate enough to see Frank DeLima perform his hilarious comedy at our August 14, 1999 Annual Banquet. Some of you were able to purchase Frank’s CDs and cassettes at a reduced price. If you were not able to purchase the CDs and cassettes during the banquet, you can still do so by contacting Edith Won, 2nd VP, at  373-2658.

 

Edith is a good friend of Frank DeLima. Part of the sales proceeds goes to Frank’s favorite charitable organization. Please take advantage of this opportunity while helping Frank DeLima’s favorite charity.

If you misplaced your membership certificate or never received one, and you want one, please call Ed Chang at 623-5910. He will make you one and mail it to you.

 

 

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

 

The Board of Directors reminds you that the quarterly meetings are open to the membership. These meetings are held on the third Sunday of January, April, July and October.

 

After the meetings, a generous lunch is served at no charge. Call Maile Chang, 1st VP, at 946-6781 so enough tables can be arranged at Yong Sing Restaurant.
