Oo Syak Gee Lu Society 2007 Scholarships




The Annual Scholarship Awards dinner was held on July 7, 2007 at the Mandalay Restaurant on Alakea Street. The Oo Syak Board of Directors met with the scholarship recipients, parents and grandparents, and judges.



The winners presented alphabetically:

John William Kwan Mung Chang

Parents: Roy Kam Sau Chang and Anna Jeung Chang
Grandparents: Gordon Dai Fun Chang and Evelyn Yin Wong Chang
John William is a sophomore at University of the Pacific in Stockton, California. He is majoring in Biological Sciences, and is conducting an independent research project in Behavior Ecology and Conservation of Birds and Mammals - which studies the effects of global warming, pesticide use and changing environments on birds and mammals in the California delta and coastal regions. After his decision to become a dentist, John William will be shadowing Dr. Douglas Shiraki in his office this summer, and in the fall, he will be a student intern with Dr. Lyndon S. Low in Stockton, California.

Morgen Lai On Chang

Parents: Anthony Kai Ung Chang and Lisa Konove
Grandparents: Hoo Kin "Robert" Chang and Ethel Fook Oi Chew Chang
Morgen just graduated from Punahou School, and was in the Punahou Band and Symphony Orchestra, and Junior ROTC. Morgen is also a dancer for Hawaii Ballet Theatre and the Punahou Dance School where she is a Dance Teaching Assistant. She has also participated in a foreign exhange program to Beijing, China during her junior year of high school. Although she is undecided in her career, she plans to pursue her cultural studies at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota and continue her study of the Chinese language.

Roy Nicholas Kwan Wo Chang

Parents: Roy Kam Sau Chang and Anna Jeung Chang
Grandparents: Gordon Dai Fun Chang and Evelyn Yin Wong Chang
Roy Nicholas is a graduate student at Stanford University where he is getting a Master's degree in Biological Sciences. He is currently a research assistant at Callahan Laboratory at University of Hawaii and investigates patterned differentiation of heterocysts in cyanobacteria. Roy Nicholas also volunteers as a long term care.





Victoria Mei Ling Chang

Parents: Roy Kam Sau Chang and Anna Jeung Chang
Grandparents: Gordon Dai Fun Chang and Evelyn Yin Wong Chang
Entering as a third year law student at the William S. Richardson School of Law at University of Hawaii, Victoria is an intern at the Department of Prosecuting Attorney for the City and County of Honolulu. She is assigned to the Career Criminals unit, which handles high profile criminal cases often featured on the news you watch at night. As an advocate for the State of Hawaii, Victoria plans to become a prosecuting attorney and make a difference by deterring crime, convicting perpetrators, and making Hawaii's streets safer.
